The Direct Method
Why is it so effective?
Just say it!
The best way to learn English is to simply speak it. Learners do not only listen to, but also take an active part in the course, answering the teacher's questions in order to practice more speaking and numerous words and grammatical structures.
Learn words and grammar by speaking!
The direct method focuses on practice and oral work – undersating and speaking. Most of the time during the lessons there is speaking with the teacher, while the controlled dialogue is used, in which the teacher asks questions related to previously taught vocabulary and grammar.
Think in English!
The main aim of the method is to teach communication skills in English, by minimising the use of the mother tongue and maximising the use of a target langauge. This results in thinking in English!
Communicative Langauge Teaching
The CLT approach is based on giving learners the skills to confidently communicate in real-life situations of their target language. In this way, it moves away from a traditional way of teaching mostly grammar to encourage the authentic use of language in numerous real-world situations, such as ‘At the doctor’s’, ‘At a restaurant’, ‘In a town’, ‘At the hairdresser’s’, and so on. That is why, CLT focuses on interaction and problem solving and implies classroom activities like a role play and a pair / group work.
